Pencil Portrait | Wonderful Life

wonderful life

And the portrait is completed! I talked briefly about this portrait a couple of days ago in this post, A New Book to Read & A New Drawing. I am inspired to sketch this portrait after listening to Katie Melua’s cover song of Wonderful Life by Black (Colin Vearncombe).

“Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There’s magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine…” ~ Wonderful Life ~ Black (Colin Vearncombe)

I love Katie’s voice. It’s very soothing and calming. I discovered her songs on Youtube. She did a beautiful cover of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven.

And here’s a video of Katie singing Wonderful Life.

When I listen to this song, it reminds me to take a break from my busy life and just be in the moment, to breathe and be still. Our life is full of activities and plans and it is very easy to get so busy and we barely able to catch our breath. From morning until late at night we are often so preoccupied with stuff. Sometimes it’s good to just stop and relax. To appreciate the little things in life like smell the roses/flowers.

” No need to run and hide
It’s a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful, wonderful life.”

Life will become more meaningful and wonderful if we make effort to appreciate our family and friends more or to enjoy the wonders nature has to offer.

I have not posted here in awhile. I have been busy working on commissioned art and going for my Gawai holiday. Anyway, I completed this portrait of my husband and son sometime in May.

Sabina Altynbekova

Sabina Altynbekova – dubbed the most beautiful volleyball player in the world or the living anime-girl.

They said she is too beautiful to play volleyball (I said why not?)

This 20 years old Kazakhstani was discovered by international media outlets while representing her country at 2014 Asian Junior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Taiwan. It was said that she was so attractive that it was a distraction to the sport. Fans weren’t even watching the games during the competition and instead just stared at her 😂 😂 😂

Medium: graphite on A4 paper

Jerry Yan and Barbie Hsu

Each piece completed is a labor of love.

Long before Korean drama craze spread in Asia (yes even before Winter Sonata), I think many girls of my generation relates to having Dao Ming Si as their first tall-dark-and-fictional first love. Meteor Garden (MG) paved the way to us girls realizing that yeah Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp were pretty but these Asian hunks were better. It was immensely popular back then that people literally stop what they were doing to get giddy-ish about the love-you-hate-you relationship between Shan Cai (Barbie Hsu) and Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan). The absurdity of their relationship was so commically and painfully endearing.

It has been 16 years since MG first aired in Taiwan and across Asia but this couple still occupies a space in my heart.

On the 16th anniversary of the series, it was announced that Meteor Garden fresh remake is slated to air in 2018; new casts of course to cater to the new generation of viewers (the original casts and most fans are in our 40s now…just saying XD).

I completed this portrait of Jerry Yan and Barbie Hsu within a week, as a tribute to the original series. I used 2 reference photos and Photoshopped them together.

Media: graphite and charcoal on A3 paper.

Please ignore the grid marks. This portrait is for practicing and my personal collection. Grid marks are not visible on commissioned portraits.

Note: I am taking portrait commission (A4/A3 size for pencil/marker/watercolor stencil portrait), PM me for details. You can see some of my work here Portfolio
