Finally I Updated My Portfolio!

I finally updated my portfolio after a couple of years of setting up my website! For the past 15 months, I was busy blogging at Steemit.com and this website was basically abandoned. I was too busy building my presence over there that I thought it was too much work to maintain a couple of sites at the same time. However, I keep this site because I knew I will be actively using it eventually. And since I discovered Steempress plugin , there is no need for me to use Steemit editor because whatever I posted here will be posted on Steemit simultaneously.

No art post from me today because I was going through my artworks to select the best ones to feature on my portfolio. I have been pursuing art seriously close to 5 years now and I have a small collection of artwork that I keep in files. I said “small” because what I created were nothing compared to those who have been in this field for many, many years. Throughout these years I always reverted to 3 art styles – doodle, stencil, and portrait. I guess I could never choose to pursue solely one style. I love the three of them equally but I can never know. I may prefer one style over the others as time goes by. There is a very good article talking about this: Does it pay to specialize as an artist?

You can view my portfolio here. I have another page to update which is the In the Press page. I have a couple of press clippings that I want to upload but that will have to wait 🙂

Thank you for checking out my post! I hope you like my art and give me a follow 🙂

Doodle Painting | Orang Ulu Girl

“Orang Ulu” girl doodle? What is Orang Ulu? Orang Ulu literally means “people of the interior” in Malay. Orang Ulu is a term that is used to identify a group of 27 small tribal groups in the northeastern part of Sarawak (Malaysia Borneo).

The Orang Ulu tribal groups are diverse, they typically live in longhouses elaborately decorated with murals and woodcarvings. They are also well known for their intricate beadwork detailed tattoos, rattan weaving, and other tribal crafts. The Orang Ulu tribes can also be identified by their unique music – distinctive sounds from their sapes, a plucked boat-shaped lute, formerly with two strings, nowadays usually with four strings. They also practice Kanjet, a form of traditional dance. ~ Wikipedia

Orang Ulu women are well-known for their beauty. You can see pictures of them here. I am inspired to make a doodle painting as a tribute to their beauty. This doodle is not complete yet. I was busy upgrading my website and installing Steempress plugin. I heard about this plugin several months ago but I wanted to “clean up” my website before I could use it. See, I have not updated my site for more than a year and some of the information stated there had changed. I stopped updating my site when I discovered Steemit because I find it was too bothersome to post at 2 different sites. Now I am so thrilled to know there is an app that I could use to post on my site and also post on Steemit at the same time! Finally, I can use my site as my “HQ” with all the links to my art shop all in one place 🙂

I hope to finish this painting tomorrow but it all depends on my kids if they are well. Both of them are down with mild cold and my concern is for my son because he has asthma. I hope it doesn’t cause wheezing 🙁

Here are a couple of progress photos:

Pencil Portrait | Wonderful Life

wonderful life

And the portrait is completed! I talked briefly about this portrait a couple of days ago in this post, A New Book to Read & A New Drawing. I am inspired to sketch this portrait after listening to Katie Melua’s cover song of Wonderful Life by Black (Colin Vearncombe).

“Here I go out to sea again
The sunshine fills my hair
And dreams hang in the air
Gulls in the sky and in my blue eyes
You know it feels unfair
There’s magic everywhere
Look at me standing
Here on my own again
Up straight in the sunshine…” ~ Wonderful Life ~ Black (Colin Vearncombe)

I love Katie’s voice. It’s very soothing and calming. I discovered her songs on Youtube. She did a beautiful cover of The Cure’s Just Like Heaven.

And here’s a video of Katie singing Wonderful Life.

When I listen to this song, it reminds me to take a break from my busy life and just be in the moment, to breathe and be still. Our life is full of activities and plans and it is very easy to get so busy and we barely able to catch our breath. From morning until late at night we are often so preoccupied with stuff. Sometimes it’s good to just stop and relax. To appreciate the little things in life like smell the roses/flowers.

” No need to run and hide
It’s a wonderful, wonderful life
No need to laugh and cry
It’s a wonderful, wonderful life.”

Life will become more meaningful and wonderful if we make effort to appreciate our family and friends more or to enjoy the wonders nature has to offer.

Rendy and Neville

I have not posted here in awhile. I have been busy working on commissioned art and going for my Gawai holiday. Anyway, I completed this portrait of my husband and son sometime in May.

Sabina Altynbekova

Sabina Altynbekova – dubbed the most beautiful volleyball player in the world or the living anime-girl.

They said she is too beautiful to play volleyball (I said why not?)

This 20 years old Kazakhstani was discovered by international media outlets while representing her country at 2014 Asian Junior Women’s Volleyball Championship in Taiwan. It was said that she was so attractive that it was a distraction to the sport. Fans weren’t even watching the games during the competition and instead just stared at her 😂 😂 😂

Medium: graphite on A4 paper

Please ignore the grid marks. This portrait is for practicing and my personal collection. Grid marks are not visible on commissioned portraits.

Note: I am taking portrait commission (A4/A3 size for pencil/marker/watercolor stencil portrait), PM me for details. You can see some of my work here: Portfolio

Jerry Yan and Barbie Hsu

Each piece completed is a labor of love.

Long before Korean drama craze spread in Asia (yes even before Winter Sonata), I think many girls of my generation relates to having Dao Ming Si as their first tall-dark-and-fictional first love. Meteor Garden (MG) paved the way to us girls realizing that yeah Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp were pretty but these Asian hunks were better. It was immensely popular back then that people literally stop what they were doing to get giddy-ish about the love-you-hate-you relationship between Shan Cai (Barbie Hsu) and Dao Ming Si (Jerry Yan). The absurdity of their relationship was so commically and painfully endearing.

It has been 16 years since MG first aired in Taiwan and across Asia but this couple still occupies a space in my heart.

On the 16th anniversary of the series, it was announced that Meteor Garden fresh remake is slated to air in 2018; new casts of course to cater to the new generation of viewers (the original casts and most fans are in our 40s now…just saying XD).

I completed this portrait of Jerry Yan and Barbie Hsu within a week, as a tribute to the original series. I used 2 reference photos and Photoshopped them together.

Media: graphite and charcoal on A3 paper.

Please ignore the grid marks. This portrait is for practicing and my personal collection. Grid marks are not visible on commissioned portraits.

Note: I am taking portrait commission (A4/A3 size for pencil/marker/watercolor stencil portrait), PM me for details. You can see some of my work here Portfolio

Luciana Zogbi

I decided to draw beautiful Luciana Zogbi because she is so pretty! So who is she?

Luciana is a Brazilian-Lebanese singer, songwriter and musician who shot to fame online after her cover of John Legend’s critically acclaimed ‘All of Me’ went viral, garnering over 61 million views worldwide.

You can watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39_OmBO9jVg

She kinda look like Jasmine from Aladdin, imo. Btw, low quality camera phone couldn’t capture the rich shading and tones and the actual portrait isn’t as pale as this. 😩
