Doodle Art | Keep Dancing

Today I am taking a break from doodle painting and I decided to make something simpler (if you can call it that LOL). A small, A5 size, doodle art with a silhouette of a ballerina. My inspiration comes from a Pinterest pin, here.

The doodle, though it looks intricate, it wasn’t hard to draw. It just consists of a flower pattern that was repeated several times. It took me a couple of hours to complete this from start to finish.

The dance can reveal everything mysterious that is hidden in music, and it has the additional merit of being human and palpable. Dancing is poetry with arms and legs. ~ Charles Baudelaire

Doodle Painting | Orang Ulu Girl part 2

Finally, this doodle painting is completed. It took me almost a week to complete it. I was working on a commission portrait and had to put this aside. I fell sick several days ago and couldn’t really work on anything and this piece was further delayed. I wrote about this doodle here: Doodle Painting | Orang Ulu Girl.

The Orang Ulu tribal groups are diverse, they typically live in longhouses elaborately decorated with murals and woodcarvings. They are also well known for their intricate beadwork detailed tattoos, rattan weaving, and other tribal crafts. The Orang Ulu tribes can also be identified by their unique music Рdistinctive sounds from their sapes, a plucked boat-shaped lute, formerly with two strings, nowadays usually with four strings. They also practice Kanjet, a form of traditional dance. ~ Wikipedia

I guess I could never stick to monochrome colors or at most 3 colors. Almost all of my paintings are colorful! LOL rainbow colors make me happy. This painting is no exception, something bright, cheerful happy!

4 New Designs At My Redbubble Store

I have not updated my Redbubble store for several months due to some technical issues related to my images. For some unknown causes, my images were not accepted by the site. I didn’t pay much attention to it because I thought it was due to a glitch on the site. However, after trying again several times I decided to send a bug ticket to inquire. Apparently, it was caused by the EXIF data of my images. I was using GIMP to clean my scanned drawings and the software attached some data to my images that weren’t recognized by Redbubble. The tech assistant taught me to strip those data and voila! the problem is solved. And today, I managed to upload four new designs to my store.

I drew these doodles several months ago and they were meant for my Steemit stickers! However, since I owned the designs I can reuse them for whatever I like =). What do you think of these doodles? I really love intricate doodles like these but the problem is creating them make my¬†fingers suffer ūüôĀ

Head out to my Redbubble store to check out these products. I have many more designs already at the store and I will continue to upload new designs every week ūüôā

Finally I Updated My Portfolio!

I finally updated my portfolio after a couple of years of setting up my website! For the past 15 months, I was busy blogging at Steemit.com and this website was basically abandoned. I was too busy building my presence over there that I thought it was too much work to maintain a couple of sites at the same time. However, I keep this site because I knew I will be actively using it eventually. And since I discovered Steempress plugin , there is no need for me to use Steemit editor because whatever I posted here will be posted on Steemit simultaneously.

No art post from me today because I was going through my artworks to select the best ones to feature on my portfolio. I have been pursuing art seriously close to 5 years now and I have a small collection of artwork that I keep in files. I said “small” because what I created were nothing compared to those who have been in this field for many, many years. Throughout these years I always reverted to 3 art styles – doodle, stencil, and portrait. I guess I could never choose to pursue solely one style. I love the three of them equally but I can never know. I may prefer one style over the others as time goes by. There is a very good article talking about this: Does it pay to specialize as an artist?

You can view my portfolio here. I have another page to update which is the¬†In the Press page. I have a couple of press clippings¬†that I want to upload but that will have to wait ūüôā

Doodle Painting | Orang Ulu Girl

“Orang Ulu” girl doodle? What is Orang Ulu? Orang Ulu literally means “people of the interior” in Malay. Orang Ulu is a term that is used to identify a group of 27 small tribal groups in the northeastern part of Sarawak (Malaysia Borneo).

~ Wikipedia

Orang Ulu women are well-known for their beauty. You can see pictures of them here. I am inspired to make a doodle painting as a tribute to their beauty. This doodle is not complete yet. I was busy upgrading my website and installing Steempress plugin.¬†I heard about this plugin several months ago but I wanted to “clean up” my website before I could use it. See, I have not updated my¬†site for more than a year and some of the information stated there had changed. I stopped updating my site when I discovered Steemit because I find it was too bothersome to post at 2 different sites.¬†Now I am so thrilled to know there is an app that I could use to post on my site and also post on Steemit at the same time! Finally, I can use my site as my “HQ” with all the links to my art shop¬†all in one place ūüôā

I hope to finish this painting tomorrow but it all depends on my kids if they are well. Both of them are down with mild cold and my concern is for my son because he has asthma. I hope it doesn’t cause wheezing ūüôĀ

Doodle Painting | Rafflesia part 2

Here’s the part 2 of my Rafflesia painting! You can read part 1 here:¬†Doodle Painting | Rafflesia part 1.

To those who are unaware, rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world!

“Rafflesia is a genus of parasitic flowering plants. It contains approximately 28 species, all found in Southeast Asia, mainly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines.” ~ Wikipedia

The flower was named after Sir Stamford Raffles, a British stateman best known for the founding of Singapore and the British Malaya.

I chose 5 different colors for this painting – orange, ochre, cyan, cobalt blue, and purple. I have never tried this combination before but I knew it will look great because blue is the complementary color of orange, and purple looks good with orange.

As my habit, I captured the progress photos but I am quite annoyed that my phone couldn’t capture the actual colors. The real painting is so much vibrant than these photos. Like for example, you can’t really see the shading and the painting looks flat :/…oh well…

Doodle Painting | Rafflesia part 1

Here’s my latest doodle painting project that I completed today! This is just part 1 of the project and I will continue with part 2, the actual painting, tomorrow. I am currently working on a portrait commission and I hope to finish that by Friday. This doodle painting is another project¬†on top¬†of that portrait. A number of people have been commenting to me personally how consistent I am in pursuing my art. Many were actually surprised when I mentioned that I am doing this on so-called¬†part-time¬†basis because my main role at this stage of life is to taking care of my kids! Yes, I am a work-at-home-mother and I have two children age 8 and 4. So I do art on my “spare time” which I don’t actually really have. But if there is determination, there is always a way. To be honest, art is a skill I am truly proud of even though I am not that good as compared to a lot of artists on this platform. But I have no interest to compare myself to others and just enjoy what I am doing. We have a special phrase in Malay for people with that kind of attitude –¬†SYOK SENDIRI. It basically means “full of oneself”. Heck, call me whatever, I don’t care ūüėČ

So yeah, I named this piece¬†“Rafflesia”. Have you ever heard of this term before? Rafflesia is the biggest flower in the world!

I have never seen this flower in real life but my sister did. She said it smelled like a corpse! Yuck! But I would take a picture with it anyway despite the foul odor LOL.

My Doodle | People Above Things

“People Above Things”

People above things. This sentence keeps on playing on my mind throughout this evening. I think it begs to be put down on paper in some form of art. Today is Sunday and Sunday is the busiest day of my week. We have a church service from mid-morning until the afternoon. After the service we proceeds for lunch and sometimes we go for a bit of shopping or just go somewhere for a bit of fun. So as you can see, lesser time to devote to art.

So today, I decided to use this short sentence in my doodle. Nothing fancy for today but this sentence means a lot to me. You see, in my previous post¬†Time Never Waits, I wrote how we all live in a constant state of frenzy with very little time for ourselves or our family and friends. We often put¬†thingsabove people; above our relationship with our loved ones and those that really matter. These¬†things¬†could be anything – gadgets, jobs, hobbies, whatever. As long as they “take us away” from people, they fall into this category of “things”. Without realizing it our self-worth is almost completely tied to these things. We put so much emphasis on these things and sometimes, without realizing it, we might decline requests for help when others were in need.

Our excuses could be like these:

“I can’t come over to your place because I have to stay back to finish my work.”
“I can’t play with you now because I need to watch this TV show.”
“I can’t help you because I have to do…”

We put our “things” above people’s needs because they inconvenienced us. Now I am not saying work is not important etc but what I am trying to say is this:

All of us have a finite time on earth. When we reach the end, we want to be surrounded by our loved ones. The last thing we want is to be surrounded by our lifeless material possessions or achievements. When we are dying all those things will become meaningless.

So, invest our limited time on earth on people, on people who are dear to us. Put people, and relationships above the things that seem to be so important to us now.

Medium used: fine liner, and markers.

Doodle Painting | Time Never Waits

“Time Never Waits”

Nope, it never waits. It just goes on and on with our without you. Time, once it’s gone, it’s gone, we can never get it back. I often remind myself to appreciate the precious time I have and not to waste it on unnecessary activities. It is so easy to get sucked into mindless, useless time suckers, and neglect the more important things. Time suckers could be anything and I believe everyone has different time suckers. For me, it’s watching TV, browsing Facebook, worrying about things I can’t control. Now, I am not saying watching TV or Facebook are bad, it’s just that I don’t think spending so much time doing those are beneficial.

Anyway, this doodle is a page from my¬†Be Encouraged! coloring book. I published this book a couple of years ago and it’s available of Amazon if you want to buy a copy ūüėČ

Medium used: fine liner, marker, watercolors, and watercolor markers to make it more vibrant.

Doodle Painting | Be Still

“Be still”

We live in a constant state of frenzy. We often want things to be done fast, and we expect immediate results for almost everything. We hate to wait for anything.¬†“I want this and I want it now”¬†is a motto a lot of people live by. They don’t necessarily say it out loud but their attitude confirms this.

There is a specific term that refers to this behavior, it’s called¬†INSTANT GRATIFICATION.

Instant gratification is the desire to experience pleasure or fulfillment without delay or deferment. Basically, it’s when you want it; and you want it now.

I don’t deny it because I too have this attitude. My husband often commented on how impatient I am with anyone and everyone around me and I get agitated easily by tardiness.

It’s bad because it makes me unable to see the beauty of any given situation that I am in. I always look too far ahead of me, to the desirable results I crave, and makes me forget to appreciate the beauty of¬†now.

That is why when we are in the state of rush, it is important to take a moment to stop and be still. Take a moment to just breath. This simple exercise is good for our mental health and also our blood pressure.

Medium used: fine liner, marker, watercolors, watercolor pencils, and watercolor markers to make it more vibrant.
