My Girl Has A Viral Fever

Hi all, I started this new pattern design earlier today but couldn’t complete it because I was busy taking care of my sick daughter. The packed activities over the weekends finally took a toll on her. She went to school as usual in the morning but around 11am I received a call from her teacher saying that she was complaining of a headache. This was the first time it happened this year and she hardly has a headache.  I knew she must have developed a fever. Since we only have one car, I had to call my husband to go and fetch her from school. Within 30 minutes they reached home. She was feverish and lethargic. I called our family clinic whether we could come to consult the doctor but was advised to come at 3.30pm because the doctor was not in the office. I gave her a dose of paracetamol syrup after lunch and sent her to bed. However, her fever persisted.

Around 4pm I drove her to the clinic and she was diagnosed with a viral fever and was sent home with a medication, and was advised to take plenty of rest and drink more water. We came home at 5.30pm and she continued her nap until her dad came home from work at 8.30pm. She was still lethargic but felt much better.

Such is a parent life. When your kids are sick you have to put aside other things and focus your priority on them. I only managed to squeeze a bit of time to paint this small section of my latest pattern painting. If my daughter feels better tomorrow I might be able to finish it. But for now, I have nothing much to show other than this small progress.

Thank you for checking out my post! I hope you like my art and give me a follow 🙂

Pattern Design | Inktober2018 Day #3 Drawing – Leaves!

Hi all, the weekend is almost over in my part of the world and it’s half an hour before midnight. How is your weekend so far? I hope you have a great day. Weekends are the busiest times in the week for me, unlike weekdays where the daily routine is predictable. Yesterday I talked a bit about celebrating my daughter’s birthday. It was a fun but an exhausting day for our family and today is no exception. Like many people, we do our grocery shopping on weekends. After church in the morning, we went to the hypermarket to shop for our essentials. As you can see, we hardly have time to rest. Resting on weekends is a myth LOL.

Anyway, despite my busy day, I managed to squeeze some time to complete this doodle. It is my third day drawing for Inktober2018. I started to draw this a couple of days ago but only managed to complete it today.

Here are the progress photos:

And of course, I used it in my Redbubble shop. It turned out pretty 🙂

It will be available on my CreativeUnited shop sometime soon. Hopefully tomorrow =)

Thank you for checking out my post! I hope you like my art and give me a follow 🙂

My Daughter’s Birthday | A Trip to the Zoo

Hi all, no art post from me today. My daughter celebrated her 8th birthday and we had been spending the whole day to fulfill her birthday wishes. One of those wishes was to visit the National Zoo and also the Giant Panda Conservation Centre which is located within the zoo. She had been talking about this for months and we (her dad and I) had been telling her, we will bring her there on her birthday. And today we fulfilled our promises and we had a great family time at the zoo.

The last time we visited the zoo was about five years ago when my daughter was 3. My son was not born yet at that time. I asked her if she remembered anything from that trip and she said she didn’t. Back then the entrance fee was very cheap, around MYR10 (USD2.40) for adults and cheaper for children. I was quite surprised to learn that they had increased the fee to MYR44 for adults and MYR16 for kids (free entrance for 2 and below) and quickly learned that the fee was inclusive of a visit to the Giant Panda Conservation Centre. To be honest, I don’t mind the high price mainly because we don’t go there on regular basis and I am sure the money will be used to maintain the place and for the animals. I know some people are complaining about the ticket prices and I am not sure whether they are of sound mind. No one ever forces anyone to go to the zoo. If you can’t afford it or want a free animal show/viewing, well, just go to a dense jungle like our national parks, and go find the animals, or watch Youtube videos. Why bother?

I will not bore you with the details of our day but just going to show you some pictures taken today and a couple of videos of the Malayan tiger and the pony.

The weather was a typical Malaysian weather, warm and humid, but the trees provided enough shade and it wasn’t so bad. Most of the animals were napping. It was right after their feeding time and they were taking refuge from the afternoon heat.

Here are the videos. I am pleasantly surprised to see they had upgraded the tigers’ enclosures and we even managed to see the tigers up close! That was a very exciting experience!

And the pony…

Overall, it was an amazing day with the kids. We spent about 5 hours in the zoo and left when it was about 30 minutes before the closing time. We were so exhausted but the most important thing was we wanted to create memories. Children grow so fast and we want to create as many happy memories with them while we can. We never know what the future may hold, so we want to treasure every moment we have while we can 🙂

Pattern Design | Inktober2018 – Doodle Oodle

Here’s my Inktober 2018 Day 2 entry. I know I am several days behind but I am going to do this challenge on my own pace. I am not using the official prompts but I just enjoy doing my own stuff. A well-known local illustrator advised me to make full use of this drawing challenge. She said instead of just doodling aimlessly, set a goal. Say what do I want to achieve by the end of this month? Say if my goal is to fill up my online store with more products, I need to have more designs. What kind of design? Well, I have set to design patterns. So, make a goal to draw or paint one design a day, and do it the best way I can. If it’s good, use it in my shop. If not, that’s okay. It’s a learning process. By the end of the month, I hope to have at least 25 new artworks to upload to my shop. What she said makes perfect sense!

So here are the progress photos for today’s entry. A simple floral/spiral doodle.

I love the bold lines. They add contrast and dimension to the drawing.

Also, I decided to resurrect my Creative United shop after a friend commented she hopes to buy some of my stuff locally because they are cheaper than overseas POD companies. Initially, I hesitated because uploading designs to CU involve a lot of work (different products require different image sizes and dimensions). However, I give it a go for the benefits of my local fans. So here are some samples of the products with this drawing on them 🙂

Pattern Design | The Lollipop!

Hi all, here is my latest pattern artwork – the lollipop! I had a lot of fun painting this one because of the cheerful color combinations. The background was painted in leaf green but you can’t really see it on the picture. Initially, I wanted to paint the outline in ink but I decided not to at the end. It looks good as it is.

Here are the progress photos:

I love to experiment with new techniques and styles and as I mentioned in some of my previous posts, I am focusing on pattern illustration this month. I am also participating in Inktober 2018 challenge and that gives me an excuse to draw more patterns in ink.

And of course, I just had to use this art on my Redbubble store 🙂

Pattern Design | My First Inktober 2018 Drawing

Hi all,

For the past couple of days, I have been seeing Steemians posting their Inktober 2018 drawings. And today I want to share with you my first Inktober 2018 doodle. You can find more details about Inktober on this website: Inktober. I tried to participate in this challenge several times but I couldn’t keep up and wasn’t consistent. I hope I can be more productive this year.

So for this first drawing, I didn’t stick to the official prompt but decided to do my own thing. I mentioned in my previous post that I wanted to try my hand on pattern designing. Therefore throughout the month, I will draw mostly pattern stuff. However, I can’t promise if I will use ink as my main medium though 🙂

Once completed, I uploaded the digitally edited doodle to my Redbubble store. I digitally edited the lines to be white instead of black. I really love how nice it turned out. My goal for Inktober 2018 is not so much about making sales from my products but to improve my drawing skill and also my digital editing skill 🙂

Here are the progress photos:

And here are the products with this doodle on them.

Pattern Design | Bungai Terung a.k.a Borneo Rosette

Hi all, today I am back with another pattern design. This design is very special to me because it’s a well-known tattoo motif of my people, the Ibans of Sarawak, Borneo (Malaysia). There is a special meaning behind this motif. This motif is called “Bungai Terung”, literally means “eggplant flower” or widely known as Borneo Rosette. When I published my first coloring book in 2015, Sarawak Tattoo Mandalas, I included a short introduction about this design. Here is an excerpt from my book:

Bungai terung is the most well known Sarawak tattoo motif. It is the first tattoo an Iban boy would receive because it marks a new life stage for him – from boyhood to manhood. The motif has a spiral at the center that is known as Tali Nyawa (rope of life). This spiral is identical to a tadpole’s visible intestine and to the Iban it symbolizes a new journey in life.

This pattern was hand-drawn and hand-painted on a piece of watercolor paper. Once completed, I scanned and edited it in GIMP and finally uploaded it to my Redbubble store. By the way, I love Redbubble but I am thinking of offering my designs on a variety of other products not offered by Redbubble. I kind of like what Society6 offers like backpack, shower curtain, beach towel, and furniture, but I am not too happy with the profit margin for the designers. I am still not sure whether to sign up or whether I have time to maintain a couple of stores. Anyway, I will think more about this and we’ll see.

Here are the progress photos:

And here are some of the products with this design on them!

Pattern Design | Leaves

After “resting” for several days to allow my Voting Power and Resource Credit to replenish, I am back! This time with a different kind of art, well, not like the usual ones I posted. Patterns! I am trying my hand on pattern illustration for the sake of fun and also because I want to offer it as a design on my Redbubble store. Apart from doodle patterns I never draw other kinds of patterns before. So I started with the simplest one – leaves. It wasn’t hard at all but I wasn’t sure how it would look on products.

Here are the progress photos:

After completed, I scanned the painting and edited it in GIMP, a free image manipulation program. Finally, I uploaded it to my Redbubble store. Here are some of the products featuring this design.

I am very pleased with the outcome. The colors turned out to be very vivid and pretty! To see the rest of the products, you can visit this link: my Redbubble store.

What do you think of this pattern?

Stencil Art | Bunny!

Hi all, this is my first post after Hardfork20! The first thing I did once I knew we are able to post again is to check my voting power and Resource Credit (RC) at steemd.com. Lo and behold, like most people my voting power has been drained more than 50%, and my RC is around 48%. I guess I have to disable some of my voting trails to allow my VP and RC recharging properly. I was a bit worry that I can’t post but that’s not true. I will reply to comments but I won’t be able to vote anyone until my VP is at least 80%.

Back to my art. Here is the latest artwork that I completed a couple of days ago. I missed making stencil paintings. Stencil paintings could be complicated depending on how many layers you want it to be but this one is pretty simple because I am using one layer for the stencil. I knew pro stencil painters could work months on a painting. The more complicated the painting, the more planning need to be done and of course, the more cutting involved.

Here are the progress photos. By the way, I used table salts to create the texture on the watercolor background.

Thank you for checking out my post! I hope you like my art and give me a follow 🙂

Doodle Art | Girl With the Red Umbrella

Just a simple doodle for today. Girl with the red umbrella. I am working on a couple of simple doodle/paintings but I am just posting this one and will post the other one tomorrow. Here’s a beautiful poem by Stacey Renshaw that inspires this drawing 🙂

The Girl With the Red Umbrella

The girl with the red umbrella is hiding her tears as the rain falls heavily and her island home disappears.
The house where she has spent her whole life is seen in the distance and her memories are replayed in an instant.
The girl grips the handle of the red umbrella so tight
as the boat sails sorrowfully by.
The girl protects herself with the red umbrella against the elements of life,
For this was the precious gift given to her by her devoted father
on the very same day he died.
